Silk contains natural proteins. Silk
is naturally stain resistant and has antibacterial property. If you have a silk filled comforter, you should dry clean
it only. However, silk filling does not need to be dry clean very often. Using
a duvet cover to protect the silk filling should be enough. Most of the silk
sheets and duvet covers are washable and can easily be taking care of in your
own home. However, when in doubt, dry clean is usually the best method to clean
silk.
Follow steps below to take care of
your silk items at home:
- DO NOT use your washing machine, your dryer, or any
bleach when cleaning silk items. If you must machine wash, use only gentle or silk cycle in cool or cold water with mild or silk detergent listed below. A lingerie wash bag will help.
- Silk is an organic fabric. It can be easily damaged by heat
and chemicals. DO NOT use regular detergent. Use gentle soap, such as Ultra Ivory Snow, baby
shampoo or mild shampoo with little chemicals in them. Downy Detergent and special silk & lingerie detergent can do a good job as well. Woolite is NOT recommended.
- Hand-wash your silk bedding in a tub of cold water. Be
gentle, as gentle as possible. Do not wring it out or bunch it out,
which will create lots of wrinkles.
- Rinse your silk bedding with cold water. Again, be very
gentle.
- You may want to hang your silk bedding indoor where has
great air circulation, you can do so. Silk beddings usually dry very
quickly within an hour or so. When it dries, most of the winkles should be
minimized without ironing. If you must, machine dry on a COOL setting for approximately 10 minutes and remove promptly. When you removed it, the sheets will be mostly dry but still a little damp. Hang over a chair, couch, or outside for it to dry completely. DO NOT expose silk item in the sun. If hang outside, it should be in the shady and cool place.
- If you want to iron the silk product, set the iron to
silk mode or COOL setting. Steaming is great if you have a steamer. Silk item should be ironed when still a little damp so they can be fully dried during ironing.
- Now you are free to enjoy your clean luxurious bedding.
